Course Description

This course, Adult and Geriatric Nursing (Practical), provides an opportunity for students to utilize knowledge from the theory courses, namely Adult Nursing I & II and Geriatric Nursing, in clinical practice. The students will apply the nursing process while caring for patients with medical, surgical, eye, ear, nose, throat (EENT), and gynecological problems. This course also provides an opportunity to develop skills in operation theatre techniques.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Utilize the nursing process in providing holistic care to adult and geriatric patients by applying knowledge from basic and social sciences.
  • Provide health education to the individual, family, and community with an understanding of the patient’s psychosocial needs and their impact on health and illness.
  • Assist/perform different diagnostic investigations.
  • Provide nursing care to patients with medical, surgical, gynecological, Eye, ENT, and skin disorders.
  • Provide appropriate pre and postoperative nursing care for individuals undergoing different types of surgery.
  • Carry out the role of scrub and circulating nurse in activities meeting the needs of clients in the operation theatre.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of health hazards in the OT and take necessary precautions for the safety of the OT staff and patients.

Clinical Experiences and Activities

Students will be posted to various units for clinical practice under the guidance of a clinical supervisor for a total period of 28 weeks. Students will have experiences in various areas such as medical, surgical, EENT, skin, gynecological, burn, ICU, CCU, and OT.

The clinical activities are:

  • Providing comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients with medical, surgical, EENT, skin, gynecology, and burn problems by using the nursing process.
  • Assisting in special diagnostic procedures such as paracentesis, ECG, taking biopsy, etc.
  • Developing case studies and case presentations.
  • Providing health teaching to patients with different problems.
  • Carrying out the role of a scrub nurse and circulatory nurse for at least four major cases and five minor cases.
  • Assisting in anesthesia.
  • Taking care of the patient in the recovery room.
  • Preparing and implementing a minimum of 5 nursing care plans.
  • Maintaining a detailed logbook of all activities.

Evaluation

Internal Assessment

  • Clinical performance (evaluated in each ward).
  • Nursing care plans in each unit (medical, surgical, EENT, and gynae).
  • Performance evaluation in the OT (Scrubbing for 5 major and 5 minor cases).
  • Health teaching sessions in each unit (minimum of 5).
  • Case study and presentations of adult and geriatric patients (total of 5).

Final Examination

  • Practical examination.
  • Oral examination (Viva).
