Course Description

This course is designed to provide knowledge regarding the care of the clients with eye, ENT, reproductive system and skin disorders by using nursing process. This course also provides the opportunity to the students to learn about the operation theater nursing techniques and immediate postoperative care.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Review the structures and functions of special senses/organs.
  • Explain the common disorders of the eye, ear, nose, throat and reproductive system.
  • State the nursing process while providing holistic care to the clients suffering from eye, ear, nose, throat and reproductive and skin disorders.
  • Discuss the nursing responsibilities for the clients undergoing for diagnostic procedures.
  • Discuss the therapeutic effects of the medications used in eye, ENT, reproductive disorders.
  • Discuss common skin disorders and medical nursing management.
  • Discuss the nursing responsibilities of a circulating nurse, scrub nurse and recovery nurse in OT.
  • Identify the basic instrument used in general surgery.
  • Discuss the principles of surgical asepsis and care of the instruments.
  • Describe anesthesia and its use in OT.
  • Describe the nursing management of the clients with the reproductive disorders including breast.
  • Discuss the causes and management of male sexual dysfunction.

Course Content Details

Unit 1: Disorders of the Eyes 10 hrs

  • Review of anatomy and physiology of the eye
  • Management of the patients with eye and vision disorders
  • Disorders of the eyelids: Blepharitis, Chalazion, stye, Trichiasis, entropion, ectropion
  • Disorders of the lacrimal system: Dacryocystitis
  • Disorders of the Conjunctive: Subconjunctival hemorrhage, Pterygium, Conjunctivitis, Trachoma
  • Disorders of the cornea, lens and adjacent parts: Corneal abrasion, Corneal ulcer, Xeropthalmia, Cataract, glaucoma
  • Disorders of the uvea: Uveitis
  • Disorders of the retina: Retinal detachment, Retinoblastoma, Diabetic retinopathy, Macular degeneration
  • Ocular trauma and tumors
  • Refractive errors
  • Visual impairments
  • Diagnostic procedure performed in eye disorders
  • Commonly used Medications
  • Nursing Management of the patients with in ocular disorders

Unit 2: Disorders of the Ears 10 hrs

  • Review of anatomy and physiology of ear
  • Assessment and management of the patients with hearing and balance disorders
  • External ear disorders: Otitis externa, Furunculous, Foreign bodies, impacted cerumen
  • Middle Ear Disorders: Otitis media, Mastoiditis, otosclerosis
  • Inner Ear Disorders: Menier’s disease, Labyrinthitis
  • Tumors of the ears: Acoustic neuroma
  • Hearing impairment
  • Commonly used medications in ear disorders
  • Pre and postoperative management of the clients undergoing ear surgery
  • Aural rehabilitation and hearing aid

Unit 3: Nose and Throat Disorders 10 hrs

  • Review of the anatomy and physiology of Nose and Throat
  • Assessments of client with nose and throat disorders
  • Disorders of the nose: Foreign body, Deviated nasal septum, Epistaxis, Nasal polyps and tumors
  • Disorders of the throat: Foreign body, Pharyngitis, Laryngitis, Tonsillitis, Tumors of larynx
  • Diagnostic investigations for nose and throat problems
  • Commonly used medications in nose and throat problems
  • Pre and post operative nursing management of patient with nose and throat surgery
  • Special nursing care for tracheotomy and tonsillectomy

Unit 4: Skin disorders 15 hrs

  • Overview of anatomy and physiology of skin
  • Management of patient with skin disorders: Acne vulgaris, herpes simplex and Zoster, dermatitis, impetigo, eczema and psoriasis
  • Management of patient suffering from skin cancer
  • Nursing management of patients suffering from skin diseases including burn and other injures and gas gangrene

Unit 5: Reproductive System Disorders 30 hrs

  • Review of anatomy and physiology of female and male reproductive system
  • Structural disorders: Congenital abnormalities of genital tract
  • Gynecological assessment: History and physical examination
  • Diagnostic investigations for reproductive system disorders: Breast self-examination and mammography, Pregnancy test, Ultrasonography, Magnetic resonance imaging, Prostate fluid analysis, Laproscopy, biopsy, hysterosalpingography, High vaginal swab, PAP smear
  • Reproductive system disorders: Sub-fertility, Dysfunctional uterine bleeding, Displacement of genital/pelvic organs: Uterine prolapsed, rectocele, cystocele, enterocele, Abortion: Comprehensive abortion care (CAC) and post-abortion care (PAC), Genital tract infection, Sexually transmitted infections/diseases, Benign growth of reproductive organs, Disorders of breasts: Mastitis, breast abscess, Molar pregnancy, Trophoblastic disease, Carcinoma of reproductive organs including breast: Nursing care of client with radiotherapy and chemotherapy
  • Common disorders affecting male reproductive system: Orchitis, Epididymitis, Prostatitis, Urethral stricture, Hydrocele

Unit 6: Operation Theater Technique 25 hrs

  • History of surgery
  • Terminology
  • Operation theatre: Functions and management
  • Intra operative nurse: Circulating nurse, Scrub nurse, Anesthetic nurse
  • Principles of surgical asepsis (review from fundamental of Nursing)
  • General guidelines for maintaining surgical asepsis: Health hazards associated with surgical environment
  • Anesthesia: Stages and types: General anesthesia, Regional anesthesia: Spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve block, Local anesthesia, Topical anesthesia
  • Intra operative nursing care: Maintaining safety and preventing injury, Positioning the client, Maintaining equipment safety, Maintaining asepsis, Assisting in wound closure
  • Monitoring: Respiratory system, cardiovascular system, central nervous system, temperature, gastrointestinal system, urinary system and allergic reactions
  • Monitoring during the anesthesia and in the recovery room
  • Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR): BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • Post operative care: Post anesthetic care, Oxygen and fluid therapy, Pain management, Immediate assessment- including airway, breathing, circulation and others (level of consciousness), Nursing Diagnosis, Nursing care in post anesthetic care unit, Transfer from the post anesthesia care unit to postoperative ward
