Course Description
This clinical course provides opportunity for students to develop basic skills in nursing and apply knowledge, gained from different basic science subjects in meeting the basic needs of the clients.
Clinical Objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Utilize the nursing process while caring for the patient.
- Demonstrate skill in history taking and physical examination.
- Relate knowledge from different basic sciences while performing nursing procedures and taking any nursing action.
- Demonstrate competency in performing routine nursing procedures.
- Apply the concept of universal precautions in preventing transmission of infections.
- Demonstrate skills in simple wound care.
- Apply the basic rules in handling and administering drugs.
- Demonstrate the ability in the care of dead body.

Course Content Details
Teaching/ Learning Activities
Students will carry out the following activities in relevant medical and surgical units under the guidance of the clinical supervisor:
- Bed making (different types of beds).
- History taking and physical examination of patients and nursing care plans for at least 5 patients.
- Check vital signs – TPR, BP, height and weigh checking.
- Procedures of personal hygiene: Sponge bath, mouth care, back care, hair care for at least 5 patients each.
- Carrying infection control measures as appropriate including hand washing.
- Hot and cold application for at least 2 patients.
- Nasogastric tube feeding for at least 2 patients.
- Enema for at least 2 patients.
- Catheterization and care of at least 2 patients on catheter.
- Active as well as passive exercises at least 5 patients.
- Admission/discharge procedure at least 5 patients.
- Collection, labeling and dispatching the specimen of least 5 patients.
- Medication- oral, topical.
- Giving IM, IV and SC injections.
- Care of clients with IV fluid infusion.
- Use of different types of disinfecting and sterilization.
- Providing preoperative & postoperative care of patients undergoing surgery.
- Dressing/bandaging at least 5 patients.
- CPR at least 2 patients.
- First-aid treatment to at least 2 patients.
- Care of at least 2 dead bodies.
