Course Description

This course on Psychiatric Nursing introduces students to the common psychiatric illnesses. It also emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of a psychiatric nurse in providing comprehensive psychiatric nursing services to the client and their family in various health care settings.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the historical perspective of psychiatry and psychiatric nursing.
  • Discuss the importance of therapeutic relationships in caring for clients with psychiatric problems.
  • Describe the mental health assessment of psychiatric clients.
  • Describe different psychiatric disorders and their management.
  • Explain the common psychosomatic disorders, substance and alcohol-related disorders, and their management.
  • Discuss the different psychiatric problems among children.
  • Explain the common treatment modalities for psychiatric illnesses.
  • Describe the different psychiatric emergencies and their management.
  • Explain the legal aspects of psychiatric nursing.

  • Characteristic of a mentally healthy person.
  • Mental health assessment.
  • History taking.
  • Mental Status Examination.
  • Psychological Testing (Review from Social and Behavioral Science).
  • Therapeutic relationship (Review from Nursing Concepts).
  • Therapeutic communication – interview technique.
  • Process recording.

  • Behavioral problems: enuresis, encopresis, conduct disorder.

Unit 11: Legal Aspects of Mental Health Nursing 3 hrs

  • Admission and discharge procedure.
  • Rights of mentally ill patients.
  • Mental health policy and Mental Health Act.
  • Nurses’ roles and responsibilities.

Unit 12: Psychiatric Emergencies 4 hrs

  • Excitement and violence.
  • Stupor.
  • Attempted suicide.
  • Panic attacks.
  • Dissociative Convulsion (Hysterical attacks).
  • Catatonic syndrome.
  • Neuroleptic malignant Syndrome (NMS).
  • Lithium toxicity.
  • Drug and alcohol withdrawal.

Unit 13: Treatment Modalities in Mental Health Nursing 8 hrs

  • Psychotropic drugs (Anti psychotic, anti depressant, anti anxiety and anti manic).
  • Physical therapy – ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy).
  • Therapeutic restraining.
  • Psychotherapy (individual, family, behavior, group and milieu therapy).
  • Counseling, Rehabilitation, Occupational therapy.
  • Nursing care management related to different therapies.

Unit 14: Preventive Psychiatry 4 hrs

  • Trends of care: de-institutionalization.
  • Public health model of care (review).
  • Primordial, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary prevention.
  • Special groups – Identification and care.
  • Role of nurse in community mental health programs.

Teaching and Evaluation

  • Teaching/Learning Methods: Lecture/Discussion, Problem-based learning, Self-directed Learning, Group projects/presentation, Internet Resources, Observation visits, and Clinical posting/experiences.
  • Internal Assessment: Written exam, Project work, Class assignment and presentation.
