Course Description
This course offers students the opportunity to apply principles of psychiatric nursing in providing holistic nursing care to psychiatric patients and their families. This course also helps to develop skills in conducting therapeutic counseling.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course on Psychiatric Nursing (Practical), the student will be able to:
- Provide care to patients/families with Psychiatric problems using the nursing process.
- Perform history taking and mental status examination of Psychiatric clients.
- Prepare nursing care plans according to individual needs.
- Plan and provide health teaching according to need.
- Communicate effectively with client/family focusing on their special needs.
- Conduct therapeutic sessions with clients and families.
- Counsel the clients and families with Psychiatric problems.
- Find out the strategies used in treatment methods.

Teaching Learning Activities
- Students in the Psychiatric nursing practicum will use the nursing process in caring for patients/families with Psychiatric problems.
- Each student will practice taking history, performing mental status examination and provide health teaching.
