Course Description

This practical course, Child Health Nursing (Practicum), offers students the opportunity to develop skills and attitude in the care of newborns and children, sick or well. This course also provides opportunity in developing in-depth understanding about the various disease conditions of children.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Admit/ discharge children by following the hospital rules and policy.
  • Assess the nursing care needs of the children of various age groups from newborn to adolescence.
  • Prepare written nursing care plans according to the needs of the children.
  • Implement and evaluate the nursing care plans.
  • Provide care to the normal as well as sick newborn.
  • Resuscitate a newborn.
  • Carry out pediatric procedures competently.
  • Provide psychological support to the children and their families.
  • Assist parents/ care giver in meeting the physical and psychological needs of the children.
  • Give health education to parents/care givers for illness prevention and health promotion of children.

Teaching Learning Methods

  • Clinical placement of students in newborn unit/ labor room for 1 week and in medical and surgical wards of children hospital for 4 weeks.
  • Carrying out admission and discharge of children.
  • Performing neonatal resuscitation and examination.
  • History taking and physical assessment of children of different age groups.
  • Use of nursing process in the care of children.
  • In-depth case study and case presentation.
  • Provision of health education to parents/ care givers.
  • Exhibition on relevant topics like play materials, supplementary nutrition etc.

Evaluation & Assessment

The total marks for Child Health Nursing (Practicum) are 100, split between internal assessment and a final examination.
