Course Description
This course focuses on the application of the theoretical knowledge in providing holistic care to individuals, families and communities at different levels of health facilities. It also emphasizes on the application of principles of primary health care in collaborating and coordinating with various health related agencies for the improvement of the health status of mother, newborn and children.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Provide holistic care to the pregnant mothers, neonates and children in FP/MCH clinics and at various levels of health facilities.
- Identify and manage the high-risk neonate, mother and children in the community using nursing process.
- Conduct FP/MCH and immunization programs as a member of health team.
- Utilize health indicators in planning, programming, implementing and evaluating health activities in the community.
- Participate in community activities in the provision of preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care to the mother, neonate and children including school children.
Teaching/Learning Activities
Students will be placed in FP/MCH clinic for 4 weeks and in residential community practicum for 4 weeks.

- Setting up of FP/MCH clinic
- Growth monitoring
- Immunization
- FP need assessment
- Counseling couple/clients for family planning methods
- Distribution of temporary contraceptive methods
- Health teaching on FP/MCH components
At residential field
- Family health nursing care study using nursing process
- Antenatal, natal and postnatal care including history and examination
- Screening of health of school children
- Health teaching
- Care of high-risk mothers, newborn and children
- Community empowerment activities on FP/MCH care
