Course Description
This course offers the student opportunity to implement the concepts and principles of management and health economics in the hospital and community units. Of the total 9 weeks of management practicum, student will spend 4 weeks in ward management, 4 weeks in community management and 1 week in campus administration as follows.

Course Content Details
Course Practicum Breakdown
Ward management (4 Weeks | 180 hrs)
In the hospital, each student will have in charge experience for 1 week. They will be posted in the ward in 3 shifts under the supervision and guidance of the instructor or ward sisters. Each student is required to have experience in the ward management as follows.
- 1 week morning duty: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
- 1 week evening duty: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
- 1 week night duty: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 72 hrs
- 1 week unit in charge duty: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
Community Health Nursing Administration (4 Weeks | 144 hrs)
- 1 week observation units: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
- 1 week DPHO administration: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
- 2 week PHC management: 6 hrs/day X 12 days = 72 hrs
Campus Management (1 Week | 36 hrs)
- 1 week: 6 hrs/day X 6 days = 36 hrs
Course Objectives
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
Ward management
- Act as in-charge in different wards taking full responsibilities.
- Co-operate with different categories of staff and departments.
- Assign duty for the staff and students.
- Supervise the junior students and auxiliary workers under her management in the ward.
- Maintain daily/weekly supplies according to needs of the unit.
- Identify the administration problems in the unit and try to solve them in an effective manner with co-operation of ward sister/staff.
Community health nursing administration
- Identify the structure and functions of district public health office.
- Prepare work schedules for daily activities.
- Supervise the work of the auxiliary health workers in the primary health care center.
- Identify the administrative problems at district and health faculty level and give possible suggestions.
- Identify resources, both personnel and material, in the health faculty and mobilize these resources to solve problems or to improve the situations.
- Plan and give in-service teaching to health facility.
Campus administration
- Identify the managerial administrative and academic responsibilities of the campus chief in an educational institute.
Clinical Experience
Ward management
- Planning routine work in ward/unit
- Taking in charge ship in one shift
- Taking night report, hand over of equipment and supplies, including drugs.
- Delegation of responsibilities to staff and students
- Preparing for doctor’s round.
- Planning for clients in order
- Maintaining cleanliness of ward/unit
- Maintaining good interpersonal communication with staff and clients
- Writing daily reports delicate to different departments of necessary
- Taking and giving patient’s report
- Checking supplies and equipments
- Ordering supplies as required
- Making list of supplies
- Giving health teaching and planning
Community Management
- Observing work performance of staff and students
- Keeping up-to-date records and reports
- Evaluating reports for accuracy
- Observing and reporting of health facilities
- Preparing organogram of Ministry of health and health post
- Planning work schedule at district/health faculty
- Identifying administrative problems and solutions:
