Course Description
This course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge to the students regarding the care of women with normal and abnormal pregnancy based on Skilled Birth Attendant Core Competencies (See Annex 1).
Course Objectives
Unit 1: Introduction
- 1.1 Discuss the historical overview of midwifery in national and international context
- 1.2 Define the terms used in midwifery
- 1.3 Discuss International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) code of ethics including the legal aspects in midwifery
- 1.4 State the national policies, strategies and core competencies of SBA
- 1.5 Discuss the role of SBA in promoting maternal and newborn health
- 1.6 Recall the anatomy and physiology of female and male reproductive system including the hormonal influences.
- 1.7 Discuss the importance of preconception care
Unit 2: Foetal Development
- 2.1 Explain the process of conception and fetal development
- 2.2 Discuss the development of placenta, membranes and cord along with their functions
- 2.3 Explain foetal circulation including the changes that takes place in circulatory system after birth.
- 2.4 Identify the various malformations in placenta, membranes and cord.
Unit 3: Female Pelvis and Fetal skull
- 3.1 Describe female pelvis and its landmarks
- 3.2 Describe fetal skull including its landmarks and effect in labor
- 3.3 Explain feto-pelvic relationships
Unit 4: Physiological changes during Pregnancy
- 4.1 Explain the physiological changes that occur in body systems during pregnancy
- 4.2 Discuss the various methods of diagnosing pregnancy
Unit 5: Antenatal care
- 5.1 Describe the objectives and importance of antenatal care
- 5.2 Identify effective communication skills for maternal and newborn care
- 5.3 Explain the methods of assessing pregnant woman
- 5.4 Explain the method of calculating the expected date of delivery (EDD) and period of gestation (POG)
- 5.5 Describe the various antenatal screening test
- 5.6 Pelvic assessment for adequacy in last trimester.
- 5.7 Discuss the various methods of assessing fetal wellbeing during pregnancy
- 5.8 Discuss about the health education/ counseling to be given to pregnant women
Unit 6: Disorders of Pregnancy
- 6.1 State high-risk conditions during pregnancy
- 6.2 Discuss the common minor disorders of pregnancy and their management
- 6.3 Explain the causes and management of bleeding during early pregnancy
- 6.4 Explain the causes and management of bleeding during late pregnancy
- 6.5 Discuss about hyperemesis gravidarum and its management
- 6.6 Discuss about the hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and their first-line management according to national protocol
- 6.7 Discuss essential hypertension and its management
- 6.8 Discuss the amniotic fluid disorders including their diagnosis
- 6.9 Explain the pathway of Rh iso-immunization during pregnancy and its effect on the foetus.
Unit 7: Medical Diseases Associated with pregnancy
- 7.1 Describe the medical disorders complicating pregnancy including their management effect on mother and fetus.
- 7.2 Discuss the effects of sexually transmitted diseases on the mother and foetus
Unit 8: Drugs used in Pregnancy
- 8.1 Describe the common drugs used during pregnancy including their action, side effects and nursing implications
