Course Description

This course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge to the students regarding the care of women with normal and abnormal pregnancy based on Skilled Birth Attendant Core Competencies (See Annex 1).

Course Objectives

Unit 1: Introduction

  1. 1.1 Discuss the historical overview of midwifery in national and international context
  2. 1.2 Define the terms used in midwifery
  3. 1.3 Discuss International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) code of ethics including the legal aspects in midwifery
  4. 1.4 State the national policies, strategies and core competencies of SBA
  5. 1.5 Discuss the role of SBA in promoting maternal and newborn health
  6. 1.6 Recall the anatomy and physiology of female and male reproductive system including the hormonal influences.
  7. 1.7 Discuss the importance of preconception care

Unit 2: Foetal Development

  1. 2.1 Explain the process of conception and fetal development
  2. 2.2 Discuss the development of placenta, membranes and cord along with their functions
  3. 2.3 Explain foetal circulation including the changes that takes place in circulatory system after birth.
  4. 2.4 Identify the various malformations in placenta, membranes and cord.

Unit 3: Female Pelvis and Fetal skull

  1. 3.1 Describe female pelvis and its landmarks
  2. 3.2 Describe fetal skull including its landmarks and effect in labor
  3. 3.3 Explain feto-pelvic relationships

Unit 4: Physiological changes during Pregnancy

  1. 4.1 Explain the physiological changes that occur in body systems during pregnancy
  2. 4.2 Discuss the various methods of diagnosing pregnancy

Unit 5: Antenatal care

  1. 5.1 Describe the objectives and importance of antenatal care
  2. 5.2 Identify effective communication skills for maternal and newborn care
  3. 5.3 Explain the methods of assessing pregnant woman
  4. 5.4 Explain the method of calculating the expected date of delivery (EDD) and period of gestation (POG)
  5. 5.5 Describe the various antenatal screening test
  6. 5.6 Pelvic assessment for adequacy in last trimester.
  7. 5.7 Discuss the various methods of assessing fetal wellbeing during pregnancy
  8. 5.8 Discuss about the health education/ counseling to be given to pregnant women

Unit 6: Disorders of Pregnancy

  1. 6.1 State high-risk conditions during pregnancy
  2. 6.2 Discuss the common minor disorders of pregnancy and their management
  3. 6.3 Explain the causes and management of bleeding during early pregnancy
  4. 6.4 Explain the causes and management of bleeding during late pregnancy
  5. 6.5 Discuss about hyperemesis gravidarum and its management
  6. 6.6 Discuss about the hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and their first-line management according to national protocol
  7. 6.7 Discuss essential hypertension and its management
  8. 6.8 Discuss the amniotic fluid disorders including their diagnosis
  9. 6.9 Explain the pathway of Rh iso-immunization during pregnancy and its effect on the foetus.

Unit 7: Medical Diseases Associated with pregnancy

  1. 7.1 Describe the medical disorders complicating pregnancy including their management effect on mother and fetus.
  2. 7.2 Discuss the effects of sexually transmitted diseases on the mother and foetus

Unit 8: Drugs used in Pregnancy

  1. 8.1 Describe the common drugs used during pregnancy including their action, side effects and nursing implications
