Weathers

by Thomas Hardy

This is the weather the cuckoo likes,

And so do I;

When showers betumble the chestnut spikes,

And nestlings fly;

And the little brown nightingale bills his best,

And they sit outside at ‘The Traveller’s Rest’,

And maids come forth sprig-muslin drest,

And citizens dream of the south and west,

And so do I.

This is the weather the shepherd shuns,

And so do I;

When beeches drip in browns and duns,

And thresh and ply;

And hill-hid tides throb, throe on throe,

And meadow rivulets overflow,

And drops on gate bars hang in a row,

And rooks in families homeward go,

And so do I.

— Thomas Hardy

(i) The cuckoo likes the season described in the first stanza.

Answer: TRUE

Explanation: The first line of the poem directly states “This is the weather the cuckoo likes” — confirming that the cuckoo enjoys the spring-like weather described in the first stanza.

(ii) The baby birds stay inside the nest in the spring.

Answer: FALSE

Explanation: The poem says “And nestlings fly” — meaning the baby birds (nestlings) are flying out, not staying inside the nest during this spring-like season.

(iii) The speaker enjoys the weather which the shepherd dislikes.

Answer: FALSE

Explanation: The second stanza says “This is the weather the shepherd shuns, / And so do I” — meaning the speaker also dislikes/avoids the same weather the shepherd shuns. They share the same dislike.

(iv) The leaves of the beeches become brown in winter.

Answer: TRUE

Explanation: The second stanza mentions “When beeches drip in browns and duns” — referring to the dull brown autumn/winter colour of the beech tree leaves during the gloomy season.

(v) The poem describes the joy of the winter and gloom of the spring.

Answer: FALSE

Explanation: It is the opposite — the first stanza describes the joy of spring/pleasant weather, while the second stanza describes the gloom of autumn/winter. The poem does NOT describe joy of winter or gloom of spring.

2. Read the following text and do the tasks that follow. [10]

The gods brought Pelops back to life. As a special present, they gave him a chariot with a team of snow-white horses that could run faster than the wind. “Take these horses,” said Zeus to Pelops, “and find yourself a kingdom, for you shall become a great ruler.” Pelops thanked the gods and mounted his chariot and galloped down the dusty mountain road and out onto the plain. As he came around a curve, he reined in his horses, for he saw an old man dressed in rags by the side of the road. “Where are you going?” shouted the old man. “I’m off to find a kingdom,” Pelops replied. “Then I have an idea for you,” said the old man. “I know of a kingdom called Elis, where a beautiful princess lives. Her name is Hippodamia. The man who married the princess will inherit her father’s kingdom.” “That sounds perfect,” said Pelops. “There’s just one problem,” cautioned the old man. “If you want to marry the princess, you have to run a chariot race against the old king. If you win, you get the princess and the kingdom. If you lose, you get your head chopped off. So far, twelve people have lost.” “I won’t lose,” said Pelops. “My horses can run faster than the wind.” “But the king’s can run faster than the lightning,” warned the old man. “I am not afraid,” said Pelops. He thanked the old man and started off.

(v) Do you think Pelops’ decision to race for the princess and kingdom was wise? Why or why not? Give a reason.

Answer:

8. Write an essay on “Migration of Nepali Students and Professionals Abroad” expressing your opinions on its causes and effects in about 200 words. [8]

Migration of Nepali Students and Professionals Abroad

In recent years, the massive migration of Nepali students and skilled professionals to foreign countries has become a pressing national issue. Thousands of youths leave the country annually in pursuit of better higher education and lucrative employment opportunities, causing significant shifts in Nepal’s socio-economic landscape.

The primary causes of this mass exodus are rooted in the lack of quality employment opportunities and the unstable political and economic climate in Nepal. Many students migrate seeking advanced, globally recognized education which they feel is lacking domestically. Similarly, professionals such as doctors, engineers, and IT experts move abroad attracted by significantly higher wages, better living standards, and greater career progression. Frustration with bureaucratic hurdles and a lack of proper recognition for merit at home further fuel this trend.

The effects of this brain drain are severe for Nepal. On the positive side, the country receives a substantial amount of remittance, which heavily sustains the national economy. However, the negative impacts are profound. Nepal is losing its most dynamic, educated, and innovative workforce, hindering national development and industrial growth. Furthermore, it causes severe social fragmentation, often leaving elderly parents behind without proper care.

In conclusion, while migration offers individual prosperity, its long-term impact on Nepal is deeply detrimental. To curb this trend, the government must prioritize creating robust employment opportunities, improving the domestic education system, and fostering an environment that rewards innovation and talent within the country.

9. Reproduce the following sentences as instructed in the brackets. [6×1=6]

(i) Neither of the students speaks English, ……..? (Add a correct question tag.)

Answer:

Neither of the students speaks English, do they?

Rule: “Neither” is effectively negative, so we use a positive question tag. The pronoun used is “they” for “Neither of the students” in modern usage.

(ii) John has got some tricks to win. (Change into negative.)

Answer:

John has not got any tricks to win.

Rule: In negative sentences, “some” changes to “any”. “Has got” → “has not got”.

(iii) She (pass) her SEE by 2082 BS. (Use the correct form of the verb ‘pass’ to complete the sentence.)

Answer:

She will have passed her SEE by 2082 BS.

Rule: “By + future time” requires the Future Perfect Tense (will have + past participle) to show an action completed before a specified future time.

(iv) She said to him, “I was laughing at them.” (Change into indirect speech.)

Answer:

She told him that she had been laughing at them.

Rule: “said to him” → “told him”; “I” → “she”; Past Continuous “was laughing” → Past Perfect Continuous “had been laughing”; “them” remains unchanged.

(v) Open the door. (Change into passive voice.)

Answer:

Let the door be opened.

Rule: Imperative sentences in passive: “Let + object + be + past participle.”

(vi) He met his friend yesterday. (Change into ‘When’ question.)

Answer:

When did he meet his friend?

Rule: “Yesterday” is replaced by “When”; auxiliary “did” is fronted; main verb “met” returns to base form “meet”.

10. Choose and copy the correct answers from the brackets to complete the given text. (Rewriting the text is not compulsory.) [10×0.5=5]

The first one’s note said, “The house (e)…….. (you bought / you were bought / you buy / you were buying) for me is too big! I only live in a small part of it, but I have to clean the whole thing!” The second son got a note that said, “I rarely (f)…….. (left/ leave/ leaves/ will leave) the house, anymore, so I hardly use the car you gifted me”. The third son’s note said, “My darling baby, you know just what (g) …… (your mother loves/ your mother loved/ his mother loves/ my mother loves)! On hearing the remarks, the third son (h)….. (is/was/were/ are) very happy. “Mom! I love you very much, (i)…….. (don’t I, don’t you, won’t you, do you)?“, said he. It’s easy to understand how the mother responded to the sons. If you do not understand this story well, (j)……. (read, to read, would read, would have read) it again.

Answers:

(a) bought — past participle as an adjective modifying “something special” (intended to be bought)

(b) from — “differ from” is the correct collocation

(c) a — “unique” starts with a consonant sound /juː/, so “a” is used

(d) but — contrast: she loved to read the Bible BUT she couldn’t see well

(e) you bought — defining relative clause in simple past (active)

(f) leave — simple present tense with “I rarely”

(g) your mother loves — the son is speaking to his mother; “your mother” = herself

(h) was — past tense, singular subject “the third son”

(i) don’t I — positive statement “I love” → negative tag “don’t I?”

(j) read — imperative (direct command/instruction)
