1. Read the following poem and choose the correct answer. [5×1=5]
Weathers
by Thomas Hardy
This is the weather the cuckoo likes,
And so do I;
When showers betumble the chestnut spikes,
And nestlings fly:
And the little brown nightingale bills his best,
And they sit outside at ‘The Traveller’s Rest,’
And maids come forth sprig-muslin drest,
And citizens dream of the south and west,
And so do I.
This is the weather the shepherd shuns,
And so do I;
When beeches drip in browns and duns,
And thresh and ply:
And hill-hid tides throb, throe on throe,
And meadow rivulets overflow,
And drops on gate bars hang in a row,
And rooks in families homeward go,
And so do I.

When college professor, Parker Wilson (Richard Gere), discovers a rather unlikely commuter wandering around the train station, he takes the adorable lost Akita puppy home with him. When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them.
However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed. Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds, and most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that required climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex. Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air movement has also damaged the images inside. Although they are not out in the open air, where natural light would have destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are barely recognizable.
To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years after it was discovered.

a. What is recently found in France?
i. News ii. Old cave iii. Painting iv. A wild cat

Answer: i. surprised
c. What does the word ‘they’ in line 12 refer to?
i. walls ii. artists iii. animals iv. images
Answer: iv. images
d. Based on the passage, what is probably true about the south of France?
i. It is home to rare animals. ii. It has a large number of caves. iii. It is known for horse-racing events. iv. It has attracted many famous artists.
Answer: ii. It has a large number of caves.
e. Which title best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
i. Wild Animals in Art ii. Hidden Prehistoric Paintings iii. Exploring Caves Respectfully iv. Determining the Age of French Caves
Answer: ii. Hidden Prehistoric Paintings
B. Answer the following questions. [5×1=5]
a. What made Lascaux cave unique?
Answer:
The Lascaux cave was unique because its walls were painted directly with hundreds of prehistoric scenes depicting how people lived and hunted thousands of years ago.
b. Why do the people of France not pay attention to the new discovery?

c. Which animal appears most on the cave walls?
Answer:
Horses appear the most on the cave walls, outnumbering all other animals with more than 300 images.
d. Why was painting inside the Lascaux a difficult task?

John Keats, the eldest child of his parents, was born on 31 October 1795 in London. When he was only eight, his father died, and before he was fifteen, his mother died of tuberculosis, leaving him in charge of his siblings.
In 1818, his brother, George left for America. The same year, his brother Tom died of tuberculosis foreshadowing Keats’ own death from tuberculosis three years later. He was alone, bewildered, finally pressed and deserted by his ladylove. In addition to all these tragedies, his poems were unfairly criticized by the critics. Yet, he continued to hold before himself the ideals of sincerity, open-mindedness and generosity.
His poetic craftsmanship and artistic talent were best reflected in his odes, On Grecian Urn, To Autumn, To a Nightingale and his long classical poem, Endymion and the Unfinished Hyperion. The critics of his time bitterly and unjustly condemned his poetry. Nevertheless, Keats as a genuine artist went on writing, and the fame denied in his life was lavishly granted after his death.
Keats was a classic example of a gifted poet, who died young. Before his death at the age of twenty-five, he excelled in writing poems that, his talent and imaginative power, in mastery of phrases, ranked among the highest achievements in English poetry. It is clear that his talent had only started to unfold when his untimely death closed it forever. Without any relatives, deserted by his love, usually criticized by the critics, and seized in the fatal grip of tuberculosis, disheartened and lonely, the exceptionally talented poet, Keats died on 23rd February 1821, and was buried in Rome.

Dear Diary,
Today was an absolutely incredible day! I finally visited Pokhara, a place I have dreamt of seeing for years. Words simply cannot justify the breathtaking beauty of this city of lakes.
The morning started with an early trip to Sarangkot. Watching the golden sunrise slowly illuminate the snow-capped peaks of Mount Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range was a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It felt as though nature had painted a masterpiece right before my eyes.
Later in the afternoon, we went boating on Phewa Lake. The gentle breeze and the clear reflection of the mountains on the water brought me a profound sense of peace. I even visited the Tal Barahi Temple situated perfectly in the middle of the lake. In the evening, walking along the vibrant Lakeside, enjoying the local food, and listening to live music perfectly concluded the day.
I am going to bed tonight with a heart full of joy and a mind full of beautiful memories. I already know this trip is going to be unforgettable.
Goodnight!
