Class 12 grading and results
The Class 12 result decides which bachelor entrance exams you are eligible for, so every grade matters.
| Marks | Grade | Description | Grade point |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 to 100 | A+ | Outstanding | 4.0 |
| 80 to below 90 | A | Excellent | 3.6 |
| 70 to below 80 | B+ | Very good | 3.2 |
| 60 to below 70 | B | Good | 2.8 |
| 50 to below 60 | C+ | Satisfactory | 2.4 |
| 40 to below 50 | C | Acceptable | 2.0 |
| 35 and above | D | Basic | 1.6 |
| Below 35 | NG | Not graded | None |
Recent results
| Year | Result published | Pass rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2082 (2025) | Shrawan 19, 2082 (Aug 4, 2025) | 61.17% | Reported 510,987 candidates, including regular and partial; 38.83% were NG |
| 2083 (2026) | Asadh 5, 2083 | 64.13% | Exams ran Baisakh 14 to 27; 418,170 students reported |
If you get NG in a subject, you can sit the grade increment (supplementary) exam. The 2083 supplementary exam was held on Shrawan 2 and 3 and its result is published. NEB also takes retotaling applications after the result.
Most bachelor programs ask only for a pass with a minimum GPA (for example CMAT: CGPA 1.8 with D in theory and C in practical, or second division). Competitive programs such as IOE and MBBS are decided by the entrance exam rank, so Class 12 GPA is mainly an eligibility gate.
For MBBS you need Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50% (or 2.4 CGPA). One guide says students at exactly 2.4 who have C+ in all three core science subjects can appear in MECEE-BL. Do not treat a pass as enough.
How to score A+ and prepare for entrance
Study for the board exam and the entrance together
Entrance MCQs are based on Class 11 and 12 topics, so a good board preparation is also half of your entrance preparation. Make one plan that covers both.
Old is gold again
Use NEB model questions and past questions for every subject. Then solve entrance past papers for the exam you want (IOE, MECEE-BL, CMAT, BCA, IOST). Past papers show how the question style changes from board to entrance: board paper checks steps, entrance checks speed and accuracy.
A simple plan for Class 12
- Months 1 to 3: complete the textbook chapters with notes. Revise Class 11 topics that you forgot.
- Months 4 to 6: solve chapter-wise MCQs and numericals.
- Months 7 to 9: sit full timed board papers and entrance mock tests every week.
- Last month: revise formulas, diagrams and weak topics. Sleep well.
Tips that really help
- Conceptual study beats rote memory, especially for IOE.
- Negative marking is small. IOE takes off only 10% of a question’s marks for a wrong answer (0.1 for a 1-mark question, 0.2 for a 2-mark one), so every 10 wrong 1-mark answers cost just 1 mark. Choosing an option is better than leaving a question blank, because the more questions you attempt, the higher your chance of gaining marks.
- Organic chemistry is tough, but daily equation practice and learning name reactions can give you a high GPA.
- Keep practical marks safe. They are easy marks.
Life after +2: the big picture
After +2 you must choose a bachelor program, and many good programs need an entrance exam. Here is the big picture. Details of each follow below.

| Management (any stream for CMAT) | BBA, BBM, BITM, BPA, BHM, BTTM, BBA-F, BMS | TU CMAT |
| Management | BBS and the Chartered Accountancy path | BBS follows its own rules; check the college notice |
| Humanities, Education, Law | BA, law, journalism, social work, public administration, psychology, BEd | University or college admission; check each notice |
Engineering and Architecture: IOE, Pulchowk, KU
IOE entrance (TU Institute of Engineering)
IOE is the most competitive engineering route in Nepal. It runs 5 constituent campuses (Pulchowk, Thapathali, Purbanchal, Western Region, Chitwan) and 10 affiliated colleges, so 15 colleges in total. About 10,000 to 15,000 students compete for about 7,000 seats each year.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Exam type | Computer-based test (CBT) run by the IOE Entrance Examination Board |
| Pattern | 100 MCQs: 60 questions of 1 mark and 40 questions of 2 marks. Duration 2 hours |
| Total marks | 140 |
| Subjects | Maths 40 questions (50 marks), Physics 30 questions (40 marks), Chemistry 20 questions (30 marks), English 10 questions (20 marks) |
| Pass mark | There is no fixed pass mark. Seats are filled by cutoff rank, so the qualifying score changes every year |
| Negative marking | 10% of the question’s marks for each wrong answer (0.1 for a 1-mark question, 0.2 for a 2-mark question) |
| Eligibility | +2 or A-Level with Physics, Chemistry and Maths and at least 45% (or at least C grade in every subject if graded); or 3-year engineering diploma. Students waiting for the Class 12 final exam or the 6th semester diploma exam can also apply |
| Entrance fee | NPR 2,000 in earlier years; check the current notice |
| Website | entrance.ioe.edu.np |
Why there is no pass mark: the cutoff rank
IOE uses the cutoff rank to fill seats, so the pass mark changes every year.
If 10,000 students sit the exam and only 7,000 seats are available, the first 7,000 on the merit list qualify and the remaining 3,000 do not, whatever their percentage. A hard paper lowers the cutoff and an easy paper raises it.
Your entrance score is your percentage of the 140 marks. If scores tie, the higher Maths score goes first, then Physics, Chemistry and English, and after that the +2 or SEE marks. The merit list is published on entrance.ioe.edu.np.
Rules inside the computer test
- Each question shows 4 options on screen. Use the mouse only; the keyboard is not allowed.
- You can change your answer by clicking another option, but once you click, you cannot clear it. One of the four options will stay selected.
- If you want to leave a question blank, do not click any option at all.
- Bring a color-printed admit card and one ID document (citizenship, national ID, passport, driving licence, or your final Class 12 or diploma admit card).
In the 2083 cycle the form opened around Asadh and the exam was in Shrawan, and dates shifted once with a revised notice. In the IOE notice shown below, applications ran from Shrawan 27 to Bhadra 9 and the exam days were Bhadra 16 to 19. Next year, watch the website from the day your Class 12 result comes out.

BBS, CA and others
BBS under TU works differently from the CMAT programs, so read your college’s admission notice. After +2 Management, you can also start the Chartered Accountancy path, or study BCA. Management is also a strong choice if you plan to study abroad.
Humanities, Education and Law
After +2 Humanities you can study BA, law, journalism and mass communication, social work, public administration, psychology and international relations. Admission is usually through the university or college notice. Education students can look at BEd and related programs.
Universities compared: TU, KU, Pokhara, Purbanchal
Nepal has several universities, and each has its own entrance and admission cycle. Here is a fair comparison. Prices and seats change, so confirm with each notice.
| University | Entrance | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Tribhuvan University (TU) | IOE for engineering, CMAT for management programs, IOST for BSc CSIT/BIT/BSc, FoHSS for BCA | Largest and oldest. Public campuses (like Pulchowk) cost a small fraction of private fees on Regular seats. Many affiliated private colleges too |
| Kathmandu University (KU) | KUCAT-CBT for Science and Engineering | Private autonomous university with schools of Science, Engineering, Arts, Management, Law and Medical Sciences. Management and arts programs generally need 50% or GPA 2.0 in Class 12 |
| Pokhara University | Own entrance for engineering | BE programs through its school and affiliated colleges |
| Purbanchal University | Own entrance | BE programs mostly through colleges in Eastern Nepal |
| Mid-Western and others | Own cycles | Check each university’s website |
TU or a foreign franchise degree?
Many students ask if a TU degree is better than a franchise degree. The honest answer: TU is a safe choice because the fee is much lower on Regular seats, the degree is widely known, and Pulchowk is among the strongest engineering campuses. A franchise or foreign-affiliated degree can be good in a specific field, but it usually costs much more, and you must check equivalence and recognition for your plan (job, further study or Lok Sewa). Do not pay on promises. Ask for written recognition, fee and placement details.
Your entrance plan and budget
Entrance forms open fast after the Class 12 result. In the 2026 cycle, results were out on Asadh 5, KUCAT registration opened on June 19, IOE forms opened in Asadh and CMAT closed on Shrawan 19. This means the real preparation happens during Class 12.
- Choose your direction by the middle of Class 12.
- Check eligibility early: your subjects, GPA, and documents.
- Practise past papers for every entrance you plan to sit. Apply to two or three to keep options open.
- Watch official sites: entrance.ioe.edu.np, entrance.mec.gov.np, pcampus.edu.np, ku.edu.np.
- List your priorities after results: college and fee, not only the name.
Compare total four-year costs, not only the first-year fee. Add room and food, and ask if there are hidden charges. A Regular seat at a public campus often saves lakhs of rupees.
